From Law to Leadership

With over 30 years of experience in the legal field, Teri Lee Thompson has forged an extraordinary path as a federal criminal defense attorney, associate magistrate court judge, and adjunct professor. Her legal expertise has placed her at the forefront of some of the nation’s most intense federal capital trials, where she not only defended but deeply understood the human condition behind each case. Yet, while the courtroom remains a foundational part of her legacy, Teri’s influence stretches far beyond judicial boundaries.

She is also the visionary founder of Zella Publishing, a trailblazing independent publishing company committed to producing culturally rich and diverse stories for children. Under this brand, Teri has authored the powerful and beloved children’s book series The Adventures of Kai, which instills positive self-identity in Black children. Her popular titles—Kinky, Curly, Mine, Sun-Kissed, and Princess Locs—serve as affirmations of pride and confidence, helping children embrace who they are from a young age.

Understanding that change begins early, Teri established Justice Redefined, a nonprofit organization dedicated to equipping teen girls with the tools they need to overcome adversity and thrive. Its signature program, Imagine Me, nurtures self-worth and leadership potential in young girls through culturally aware mentorship.

Teri’s approach is as holistic as it is passionate. Her efforts bridge the gap between justice and empowerment by providing not only representation in the courtroom but also representation in media and mentorship. Her deep understanding of the system, combined with her relentless belief in the potential of youth, makes her one of today’s most powerful advocates for change. Whether she’s in a courtroom, classroom, or bookstore, Teri Lee Thompson continues to write the next chapter for generations of girls and teens ready to rise.

Building with Purpose: What Makes Your Company Unique

My experience within the criminal justice system for over 30 years has profoundly shaped my commitment to serve. Witnessing firsthand the struggles faced by young people—many of whom felt undervalued or trapped by their circumstances—gave me a deeper sense of urgency. I saw how a lack of confidence, positive guidance, and supportive community could lead teens down difficult paths. These experiences opened my eyes to the importance of early intervention, authentic mentorship, and environments where every young person is empowered to rewrite their story.

Rather than viewing these youth through the lens of mistakes or labels, I learned to see their potential, resilience, and untold stories. This inspired me to build programs that offer not only hope but concrete tools for growth, transformation, and self-belief. My time in the criminal justice system reinforced the conviction that when you invest in a teen’s confidence and character, you set into motion ripples of change that can impact families, communities, and future generations. My companies—whether through Justice Redefined or Zella Publishing—serve as that vessel of transformation.

Creating True Impact in a Saturated Space

My company stands out because it doesn’t just teach young girls and teen girls confidence as a one-time workshop or a surface-level lesson. Instead, I build lasting, inner confidence through books and programs that address the whole person—their mindset, self-image, resilience, and leadership potential. While other companies may focus on generic motivation, my approach is rooted in deep mentorship, culturally relevant empowerment, and practical daily strategies that girls and teens can apply immediately in their lives.

In every program I create, I prioritize safe, non-judgmental spaces where teens feel seen, heard, and celebrated for who they are. I go beyond “feel-good” slogans; I equip teens with tools to overcome anxiety, negative self-talk, and peer pressures. Most significantly, I involve families and communities in this journey, fostering environments where confidence isn’t temporary but becomes part of each teen’s identity. This holistic, heart-centered, and culturally responsive approach is what truly sets me apart.

Finding Clarity: Overcoming Early Challenges

My biggest challenge to starting my companies was defining my vision. In a crowded space where others are creating initiatives to help teens, I had to spend countless hours introspectively to determine my core values and defined goals. I knew I didn’t want to duplicate what was already being done—I wanted to create something deeply impactful and culturally specific, something rooted in lived experience.

Through prayer, reflection, and careful planning, I clarified the heart of my mission: to empower, to inspire, and to represent. With this resolve, I built practical strategies, unique programs, and relatable messages that truly resonate with my audience. That clarity gave me the direction I needed to grow Zella Publishing and Justice Redefined into meaningful movements that make lasting change.

Scaling Through Service and Strategy

What’s made the biggest difference in scaling my business has been my ability to merge personal passion with professional purpose. I’ve leaned into my legal background to build credibility and trust in the work I do, while also drawing from real-life stories of the teens and children I’ve encountered to shape impactful programs and content.

I focus on partnerships—whether with schools, community organizations, or bookstores—to extend the reach of both Justice Redefined and Zella Publishing. I also listen. Feedback from families, educators, and teens themselves fuels ongoing innovation and ensures that what I’m offering continues to be relevant and necessary. My mission to empower youth isn’t just a passion—it’s a strategic commitment that drives every decision I make.

Exciting New Releases and Expansions

Absolutely! My children’s books, journals, and coloring books—with their own custom coloring pencils—are now available on local bookshelves in the Atlanta, Georgia area and in my hometown, Montgomery, Alabama. This milestone means more children can now access empowering, culturally affirming literature in their own communities.

I’m especially thrilled about the release of my newest book, GIRLS WHO RISE: EMPOWERING GIRLS TO BECOME LEADERS. It’s currently available for preorder and serves as a dynamic guide to build confidence, courage, and purpose in young girls. This project is especially close to my heart, as it’s not just about helping girls—it’s about nurturing a generation of leaders who understand their worth.

What’s on the Horizon

Yes! GIRLS WHO RISE: EMPOWERING GIRLS TO BECOME LEADERS  is now available for preorder. This book is more than a publication—it’s a movement. It’s a powerful tool designed for girls, parents, mentors, and educators. It helps young girls discover their voice, embrace their strengths, and prepare for leadership with purpose and pride.
