Frannk Whitte named his debut album “Who?”, which is a bold choice for an emerging artist. It’s also an honest one. The São Paulo-born singer has been making music for nearly a decade, and the album is built as a direct answer to the question in its title.
He’s releasing it gradually, with a new track every couple of weeks until the full project arrives by mid-November. That patience fits the music. His records lean on warm textures, subtle arrangements and an intimate vocal that never oversells. Songs like “I Can Finally Know”, “Night Shift” and his most recent release, “Taste,” which came out September 10, have a quiet confidence. They don’t demand attention, and they don’t need to.
His genre is harder to pin down. Working between Brazil and Los Angeles, he blends alternative R&B, soul and modern pop, and he’s done electronic collaborations too. He doesn’t see that as a problem. “My music doesn’t belong to one genre,” he says. “I’m not chasing a label or a category. I’m chasing honesty.”
Music was never his only outlet. Whitte grew up acting, dancing, directing, filming and writing, but he’s clear that music has always been the core. That wider background shows in how he presents himself. His visual identity is minimal and emotionally aware, and it carries into fashion, visual storytelling and curated artistic spaces. The music and the image feel like they come from the same person.
It all started with Michael Jackson. Whitte was five when he first saw the videos, and Jackson felt like a superhero to him. He got the glove and tried to copy the moves. He started drum lessons around seven or eight, and by 13 he was making his own beats. At 15, after his first breakup, he wrote and recorded his first song and sent it to friends without telling them it was his. They loved it, and that’s when he knew he had to keep going.
Jackson is still his hero. Asked about a dream collaboration, Whitte names him and points to his mentor, veteran producer and songwriter Cory Rooney, as his connection to that world. “I feel like I caught a glimpse of his magic through my mentor,” he says. After three formative years under Rooney’s guidance, he’s stepping forward with his first full-length record.
He’s specific about what he wants it to do. He hopes a song takes someone back to a night that mattered, or to a person or a version of themselves they hadn’t thought about in a while. “Whether it’s dancing or crying, or just sitting with something real,” he says, “I want that emotional connection to be undeniable.” He’s building his career on feeling, not trends, and on songs meant to last longer than a moment.
For now, he wants listeners to sit with the album and take it in. Once “Who?” is fully out, he’s planning one or two special nights in São Paulo, the city where he was born. It’s a fitting place to finish introducing himself. By then, the title shouldn’t need its question mark.
