D$AVAGE wants you to feel something when his music comes on, not just nod along to the beat but actually sit with what he’s saying. The rapper out of Gonzales, Louisiana has been building his catalog around survival stories rather than club anthems, and you can hear the difference in what he chooses to talk about.
The Breadwinner Alumni affiliate just dropped his latest single, “Chosen One,” on July 31st. It runs a tight minute and a half, which turns out to be enough time to understand what he’s after. His music pulls from the streets, the hustle, the mistakes and the wins, all the things it took to keep moving forward.
“My music reflects where I come from,” he says. He grew up around music and played percussion, learning the mechanics of rhythm before he ever thought about writing bars. What came out of that is raw Southern street rap with actual weight behind it. Some records are made to turn you up. Others crack open his life and mindset, the pain and loyalty and the cost of the come-up.
He points to Kevin Gates and Lil Wayne when he talks about his flow, hometown giants who set a standard for saying real things over hard production. You can hear that Louisiana edge in his delivery, aggressive but controlled, memorable without straining for it. He’s not copying either of them, though. He’s carrying the BWA legacy while carving out a lane that’s his own.
Ask about a dream collaboration and he goes straight to NBA YoungBoy, another product of the same environment. For D$AVAGE it’d mean more than a feature. They came up in the same area, and he wonders if YoungBoy still remembers him from back then. Two perspectives on one culture, finally meeting on a record.
What he wants from listeners is straightforward. He’s after the kind of record that leaves you with confidence, or hunger, or the push to make the most of your own potential when the odds aren’t in your favor. His debut mixtape, “007 The Mixtape,” is on the way, and “Chosen One” is the doorway in.
