Everybody’s had the daydream where you torch your whole boring life and become someone reckless. The Layman Preachers wrote a song about that guy, then handed his fantasy to a partner who tears it apart line by line. Their new single, “I Wanna Be a Bad Man”, out August 2nd, 2026, lives in the gap between what he wants to be and the person calling his bluff.

The setup is simple. A man stuck in ordinary life rattles off everything he wishes he were: high-rolling in Vegas, coated Caddies and diamond rings, the guy who “gets his sex for breakfast” and never misses out. It’s ridiculous on purpose. And every time he inflates the fantasy a little more, his partner deflates it with a well-timed jab. “Really Tiger?” she cuts in when he starts talking about strutting a catwalk like Fred Astaire. That back-and-forth is the whole engine of the track, and it’s what keeps the song from being just another chest-thumping rock number. It’s a guy performing bravado for an audience of one who isn’t buying it.

Musically, the band leans into a vintage big-band rock swagger that suits the theatrics. A thick bass groove carries most of the weight, drums hit hard, and the vocals sit low and rough in the mix. The whole thing sounds like it was cut live in a big empty room rather than fussed over in a studio. “We wanted it to sound big and wide,” says vocalist and producer Corby Green. “That gritty raw blues bar sound. We wanted listeners to feel like they were standing in the room with the band.” At 3:37, it doesn’t overstay its welcome, and the grit makes it an easy one to loop.

The duo, Green and Heather Armstrong, have been putting out music as The Layman Preachers since 2022, working out of Townsville in North Queensland after years spent in various original bands around the region’s folk scene. They pull in a rotating cast of local friends and musicians, which is part of why their catalog jumps around so much. One release might be a gentle ballad like “Don’t Wanna Be the Friend,” the next a hard rock cut like “Don’t Get Comfortable With This,” their most Shazamed track to date. They don’t pretend to have a single lane, and they’ve made peace with being hard to pigeonhole. “I Wanna Be a Bad Man” is their fifteenth single and their third release of 2026, and they’re calling it their most ambitious yet.

The Layman Preachers

There are another 36 songs sitting half-finished in the pipeline, so nobody’s slowing down. The band keeps coming back to one line as a kind of mission statement: see how far you can go if you just don’t stop. Funny thing for a song about a guy who only ever talks about his big plans, from a band that actually keeps making good on theirs.

You can find The Layman Preachers on their website, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, with the single streaming now on Spotify.
