Joseph Rutakangwa keeps coming back to the same setup. A piano, an acoustic guitar, a bass, and a voice with something to say. No walls of sound, no studio tricks piled on to distract from what’s underneath. For an artist who grew up hearing just about everything, that kind of restraint tells you a lot about where his head is right now.

He’s been releasing music since the summer of 2020, so the chapter he’s opening now isn’t a debut. It’s more like a sharpening. Years of writing, recording, and moving between genres have left him with a clearer idea of what he wants his music to do, and he’s building an album around that.

The clarity goes back to a house where music never really stopped. Rutakangwa grew up surrounded by soul, rock, reggae, pop, gospel, Afropop, folk, and Latin records. That kind of mixed diet teaches you to hear music as a way of holding onto memory and feeling, not just something playing in the background. Those sounds shaped how he understood different stretches of his life, and it shows in the way he treats a song as a container for emotion rather than a showcase for technique.

He’d wanted to make his own music for years before he actually did it. The pandemic is what pushed him off the fence. That stretch of 2020 was a reminder of how fragile things are and how easy it is to keep putting off what matters, so he stopped waiting and put his first music out publicly that summer. A decision made under strange circumstances turned into a real practice.

Since then he’s been experimenting, testing what different sounds can carry, figuring out who he is as an artist as he goes. What runs through all of it is a pull toward music that feels emotionally honest and human. His favorite arrangements tend to be the plainest ones, where a piano and a voice do most of the work.

The new album leans all the way into that. Much of it deals with love, vulnerability, intimacy, connection, and the tangled emotions that live between people. Those are subjects that get flattened when they’re buried under too much production, and Rutakangwa seems to know it. He’s after songs that feel close and direct, the kind that sound like someone talking to you.

There’s a quiet confidence in that. When you strip things back, the writing has to hold up on its own, because there’s no thick arrangement to lean on if a line falls short. He’s comfortable with that exposure, and honestly it suits the material.

It’s what makes this feel like a turning point rather than just the next thing in the catalog. He calls it the most intentional chapter of his journey so far, and intentional is the right word. He knows the stories he wants to tell and the artist he wants to become, and the music is taking shape around those answers.

For anyone who’s followed him since 2020, this is a good moment to go back through what he’s already put out and hear it as the groundwork for what’s coming. The earlier releases document an artist figuring things out in real time, moving through genres, trying ideas on, learning what to keep and what to leave behind. You can hear him getting closer to himself with each one. The new material sounds like where all that searching was headed.

He’s keeping the specifics close for now. The album is real and it’s on the way, but the title, tracklist, and release date are staying under wraps. That fits the tone of the work itself. This is someone more interested in getting the songs right than in rushing out an announcement.

What’s worth watching is the shift in posture. Rutakangwa isn’t looking to be discovered. He’s opening the door back into a body of work that’s been building since 2020 and pointing toward what comes next with a steadier hand than he had at the start. The pandemic taught him not to postpone what matters, and this album reads like the fullest version of that lesson yet.

You can hear where he’s been and get a sense of where he’s headed on his website, on Spotify, and on YouTube, with his catalog on all the major streaming platforms. A piano, a guitar, a bass, an honest voice. Some songs don’t need more than that.
