Brandon Stewart never planned on being a Hollywood success story. Growing up in East Texas, his first brush with filmmaking came courtesy of a cheap video camera his parents bought him when he was 15.

“Man, those early YouTube videos were rough,” Stewart chuckles, recalling his teenage forays into sketch comedy. “But they taught me the basics – how to piece together a scene, how to edit. I didn’t know it then, but I was laying the groundwork for my career.”

Fast forward to today, and Stewart, now 30, has just wrapped filming on “Sovereign,” a big-budget feature starring Nick Offerman and Dennis Quaid. It’s a far cry from those grainy YouTube days, but Stewart hasn’t forgotten where he came from.

“Moving to LA at 19 was crazy,” he admits. “I knew nobody. I was this small-town kid with big dreams and no connections. Looking back, I’m not sure how I had the guts to do it.”

But guts, it seems, are something Stewart has in spades. When he couldn’t get into the famous Meisner acting classes at Playhouse West, he simply snuck in. “I figured they could only kick me out once,” he grins.

An acting coach at Playhouse West, who asked to remain anonymous, remembers Stewart’s determination. “We see a lot of eager young actors,” they say, “but Brandon’s persistence was something else. It’s that kind of drive that separates those who make it from those who don’t.”

Stewart’s rise hasn’t been without its hurdles. At 18, he was diagnosed with keratoconus, a rare eye disease that distorts vision. For someone betting everything on a career in visual media, it was a blow.

“It was scary,” Stewart admits. “There were days I thought about packing it in. But then I’d think, ‘What else am I gonna do?’ This is all I’ve ever wanted.”

Dr. Elena Rodriguez, an eye specialist who treats keratoconus patients, is impressed by Stewart’s resilience. “The visual challenges can be significant,” she explains. “For Brandon to succeed in film despite this? It’s pretty impressive.”

When COVID-19 hit and productions ground to a halt, Stewart went back to his DIY roots. He wrote and produced “present perfect continuous,” a personal film that’s been turning heads on the festival circuit.

“The pandemic was rough on everyone,” Stewart says. “But for me, it was a reminder of why I got into this in the first place. I love telling stories, whether it’s with a cheap camera in my backyard or on a Hollywood set.”

This adaptability has served Stewart well. He recently tried his hand at cinematography, serving as Director of Photography on “Monsters Within,” directed by his friend Devin Montgomery.

“Brandon behind the camera is something else,” Montgomery says. “He’s got this innate understanding of how to frame a shot. It’s like he’s been doing it for years.”

Looking ahead, Stewart’s got his sights set on directing. “I’ve got a script ready to go,” he says. “Give me five years, and I’ll have my first feature under my belt.”

Industry insiders are taking notice. A prominent talent agent, speaking on condition of anonymity due to agency policies, sees Stewart as part of a new wave. “These kids grew up with technology,” the agent observes. “They’re not waiting for Hollywood to come calling. They’re out there making their own breaks.”

For Stewart, it all comes back to those early days of experimentation. His advice to aspiring filmmakers? “Just start creating,” he says. “Don’t wait for permission. The tools are out there. Use them. Who knows? You might end up on a set with Nick Offerman one day.”

As our interview wraps up, Stewart reflects on his journey so far. “It’s been a wild ride,” he says, a mixture of gratitude and determination in his voice. “But I feel like I’m just getting started. There’s so much more I want to do, so many stories I want to tell.”

With his latest film set to release and plans for directing on the horizon, it’s clear that Brandon Stewart’s Hollywood journey is far from over. From those early YouTube days to the bright lights of Tinseltown, he’s proven that with persistence, creativity, and a bit of East Texas grit, dreams can indeed become reality.
