Dreams have a way of materializing in unexpected forms. For Lucy Mavis, they’ve become “Blood Moon,” a bold debut EP released through Calypso Records. Unveiled on January 30th, 2025, this five-track collection clocks in at just under 16 minutes, yet manages to craft entire worlds within its brief runtime – each song a carefully constructed universe of sound and emotion.

The seeds of this musical journey were planted years ago, when Mavis was just a kid with a pen and boundless imagination. “I’ve loved writing since I was a kid,” she reflects, settling into her chair during our conversation. “I could create these surreal environments whether it was to tell a story or to just describe some sort of emotion in a visceral and dynamic way.” This natural storytelling ability, coupled with her eventual forays into dance and musical theatre, would later become the backbone of her distinctive musical identity.

“Blood Moon” opens with the mesmerizing “Vladimir’s Butterfly,” where Mavis’s hypnotic vocals weave through stripped-down instrumentation like thread through fabric. The raw emotion continues with “Mercy,” before giving way to “Weathervane Cat” – a standout track that’s already garnered attention through its recently released B&W visualizer. The song’s vintage-tinged electric guitar work and masterful production hint at Mavis’s keen ear for detail.

The EP takes an unexpected turn with “Thousand Suns,” also released as a single, which ventures into electronic territory while maintaining the collection’s dreamlike essence. The journey concludes with “Hedonia,” a powerful piece that showcases Mavis’s talent for crafting atmospheric lo-fi soundscapes, particularly around its spellbinding one-minute mark.

“Blood Moon” by Lucy Mavis

When pressed about her musical style, Mavis chuckles softly. “I’ve always struggled with defining genre for my music,” she admits, “but I think it’s quite dreamlike and playful. There’s darker, moody tones alongside some more experimental up-tempo instrumentals. The melodies go from melancholic to mischievous to dynamic and lively.” Her musical influences are equally diverse, ranging from Lana Del Rey and Gorillaz to Grimes and Mac Miller, though she’s quick to point out that her sound emerges more from personal expression than direct inspiration.

Behind the scenes, Mavis isn’t resting on her laurels. She’s already deep in pre-production for several music videos to accompany the EP’s tracks, while simultaneously drafting material for her first full-length album. Between writing sessions, she’s planning her live debut in the Boulder/Denver area, though dates remain under wraps for now.

“Blood Moon” represents more than just a collection of songs for Mavis – it’s the foundation of an ambitious artistic vision. “Every song has a world connected to it,” she explains, her eyes lighting up as she describes her ultimate goal: creating immersive, surreal environments that pull listeners into each track’s unique atmosphere through both sound and visual art.

The EP serves as a promising introduction to an artist who seems more interested in building worlds than simply writing songs. It’s a bold first step that suggests Mavis’s journey is just beginning, and it will be fascinating to see where this path leads.

Sometimes the most captivating journeys begin with a single step into the unknown. With “Blood Moon,” Lucy Mavis invites listeners to take that step alongside her, into worlds where dreams and reality dance in perfect harmony. The EP is available now on all major streaming platforms, and fans can follow her evolving artistic vision on Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, or visit her official website at lucymavis.com.
