Music rarely arrives fully formed, yet emerging London artist JP.Kazadi seems to have achieved exactly that with his latest album “The Birth of Sound” (released March 17th). The sprawling 13-track collection, which clocks in at just over 45 minutes, seamlessly blends an ambitious range of soul, R&B, pop, salsa/merengue, and Afrobeat influences.
Sitting down with Kazadi, one quickly realizes his musical roots run deep. His journey began humbly in a children’s choir before evolving into a vocal group with his three brothers – experiences that clearly shaped his expansive musical vision. “The Birth of Sound” feels like a natural progression of these early influences, combined with the rich musical heritage he’s absorbed through years of international travel.
While many contemporary artists seem content to chase trending sounds, Kazadi’s approach on this album takes a refreshingly different path. The record serves up what can only be described as “a sound of freshness,” as Kazadi puts it, particularly evident in standout tracks like the uplifting ‘Kings and Queens’, the momentum-building ‘Push Forward’, and the spiritually-charged ‘Jah’.
Perhaps most striking about the album is how it manages to feel both experimental and accessible. Kazadi’s multicultural background – having lived in and visited numerous countries throughout his life – bleeds into every track, creating something that feels both familiar and entirely new. The production throughout the album’s 45-minute runtime is crisp and intentional, with each genre-spanning element finding its proper place in the mix.
“I want the listener to be empowered with love, joy, hope, belief, peace and also to find a place of safety no matter where they are at in their journey,” Kazadi shares, reflecting on his artistic intentions. It’s a lofty goal, but one that the album largely achieves through its careful balance of contemplative moments and upbeat energy.
