How A Personal Clothing Brand Became The Print Shop Local Schools Rely On

Christian Rivas will tell you he never planned to run a print shop. He wanted to run a clothing brand, and the screen printing and embroidery were just the way to get his own designs onto his own products. The equipment was a means to an end. What he didn’t see coming was that the skill would eventually outgrow the brand it was supposed to serve.

That’s the short version of how Rivas Custom Apparel Studio came to be, and it’s a story a lot of small business owners will recognize. The thing you teach yourself to do for your own sake turns into the thing everyone else wants from you.

Rivas spent years printing for his own line before any of this. That meant learning the equipment inside out, figuring out how different fabrics take ink, and picking up the production process the hard way, one job at a time. Twelve-plus years of that builds a particular kind of knowledge that’s difficult to fake. When you’ve run an online brand yourself and handled your own fulfillment, you tend to know where a job is going to go sideways before it does.

Word got around. Local businesses reached out, then schools and organizations, and what had been a passion project turned into a full-time operation almost entirely on referrals and repeat customers. There was no marketing blitz behind it. It grew because people kept telling other people that the printing came out right and the orders arrived when they were supposed to, which is usually the only advertising a shop like this needs.

By Rivas’s own account, the business has grown into a substantial operation, with busy stretches that turn out thousands of pieces in a month. For something that started with one guy printing shirts for his own brand, that’s a real jump, and it’s brought the shop to a point most owners would recognize as both a good problem and a pressing one: they’re running at max capacity and need a bigger building to keep up. Rivas talks about that less like a wall and more like a runway. The demand is there, the schools keep coming, and the next move is making room for it without letting the quality and service slip, since that’s what got the shop here in the first place.

The school partnerships are where the studio has landed on something genuinely useful. Rivas Custom Apparel Studio now handles uniforms for 13 local schools. Anyone who’s spent time in a school office knows the uniform question has a way of becoming a low-grade, permanent headache, with parent questions landing on staff who already have more than enough to do.

So Rivas built a system to take the whole thing off their plate. The studio sets up an easy online store, parents order directly, and everything after that, the packaging, the shipping, the fulfillment, is the studio’s problem, not the school’s. Staff don’t chase orders or field the questions. They run the school. The shop does the part it’s good at. It’s a clean split, and what makes it work is that it solves an actual problem people have rather than one someone dreamed up to sell a service.

That whole setup rests on the fulfillment experience Rivas already had. This is the part people underestimate. Running an online clothing brand throws you into the unglamorous machinery of the thing, the shipping logistics, the customer service, the packaging details nobody notices until one of them goes wrong and suddenly it’s the only thing anyone notices. He’d been doing all of that for years before the first school ever called, which is a big reason the system runs as smoothly as it does now.

There’s a personal side to it too, and Rivas is open about it. He frames the work through faith and purpose, describing the studio as an effort to line up with what he believes God has planned, using what he and his team know how to do to serve the people around them. He’s also got a message about couples working together, that two people can build something as a team and be good at it. It’s a way of looking at the business that goes past the numbers and puts the service part first.

Whether that framing lands for you or not, the model underneath it is sound. Rivas found a specific pain point in school uniform logistics and built something that makes it disappear, and he backed it with more than a decade of production know-how and a fulfillment setup that already knew how to move product at volume. The schools stop worrying about uniforms. Parents get one simple place to order. The shop does what it does.

That’s the line running straight from the clothing brand to the print shop it became. The skill was the constant the whole time. Rivas just worked out that other people needed it more than his own brand did. You can find Rivas Custom Apparel Studio on Instagram and Facebook, or place an order through their website.
