Hubbell Benson, an up-and-coming indie rock outfit, unleashed their latest EP, “Phantom Frequencies,” today, July 26, 2024. This six-track gem, now up for grabs on all the big streaming platforms, is a real game-changer for the band as they continue to make waves in today’s music scene.
“Phantom Frequencies” is a showcase of Hubbell Benson’s unique musical flair, which the band cheekily describes as a tightrope walk between “lofty artistic pretensions and concise accessible song craft.” Their sound is a bit of a musical cocktail, mixing flavors reminiscent of The Zombies’ jazzy vibes, early Elvis Costello’s punch, and MGMT’s production pizzazz.
The EP serves up six tasteful tracks: “(Come On) Elephant Graveyard” (2:50), “Except For Him” (2:25), “Gimme All You Got” (3:19), “Names” (3:01), “Last Call” (2:10), and “Need Someone?” (4:20). This musical feast aims to show off the band’s knack for crafting classic three-minute pop singles while throwing in some sonic curveballs.
When it comes to creating their tunes, Hubbell Benson takes a ‘from-the-ground-up’ approach. The band, made up of brothers, builds their tracks like a musical lasagna – starting with drums and piling on layers of guitar, keyboard, and what they playfully call “ear candy sound effect overdubs.” Their production style is a bit of a tech playground, mixing old-school analog with cutting-edge digital tricks, and blending live instruments with computer wizardry.
On stage, the brothers team up with drummer Joe Dilapo, forming a power trio that kicks their recorded material up a notch. Some of their centerpiece songs get stretched out with what the band describes as “psyched out jam passages,” giving concert-goers a different flavor from the studio versions.
“Phantom Frequencies” follows a string of singles the band dropped in 2023 and marks their first proper EP. The Hubbell Benson crew is also cooking up their debut full-length album and keeping their “Vibin’ with Hubbell Benson” audio/visual series rolling, which they direct and edit themselves (talk about multi-tasking!).
To celebrate the EP’s release, Hubbell Benson is throwing a shindig at Silk City Diner in Philadelphia on July 27, 2024 (tomorrow). Fans can get the lowdown on the band and their upcoming projects on their official website, Spotify, and Instagram.
As Hubbell Benson continues to fine-tune their musical identity, “Phantom Frequencies” stands as a testament to their growing artistry. The EP offers listeners a tantalizing taste of the band’s unique recipe – one part pop hooks, one part experimental zest – that’s likely to tickle the taste buds of music lovers across the board.
