In the buzzing metropolis of Tokyo, an art exhibition unlike any other is unfolding, challenging the very essence of what we understand as art. The show, titled “/imagine…AI+I=All?”, is the brainchild of Silicon Valley artist MetaCher. Introducing a novel dialogue to the renowned ARTiX³ Art Gallery, she weaves a powerful narrative around art and artificial intelligence (AI), pushing the boundaries of convention and opening doors to unexplored territories. Today, we sit down with MetaCher amidst her groundbreaking exhibit to delve into her artistic philosophy and understand the inspiration behind her “Prompt IS Art” movement.
MetaCher, your art exhibition, “/imagine…AI+I=All?”, is creating waves in Tokyo. You’ve introduced an avant-garde dialogue to the ARTiX³ Art Gallery, weaving a narrative between art and AI. Could you explain how this concept of “Prompt IS Art” came to be?
MetaCher: This time of image oversaturation calls for the examination of what lies beneath the visual. I wanted to go beyond aesthetics and delve into the intrinsic essence of creativity. That’s why I transform simple AI prompts into profound artworks, showcasing how the medium is not just the vessel but also the message.
You’ve stripped the layers of visual interpretations down to the bare prompt itself. This is a daring endeavor, yet it opens the door for limitless creative interpretations. What drove you to explore this core concept?
MetaCher: I believe both inspiration and thought are crucial to artistic creation. When I reflected on AI-generated artworks, I felt a sudden inspiration, which I now call “Prompt IS Art.” I realized the AI prompts themselves represent a modern art form unique to our present era. The prompts serve as a medium for humans to communicate with large language models while keeping a human quality since the prompts act as a medium for our imagination and expression.
Your work has a minimalist visual style, evocative of Eastern aesthetics. How does this complement the boundless imaginative space created by AI technology?
MetaCher: The minimalist style is a conscious choice. It amplifies the space where creativity manifests. The ‘/imagine…’ prompt isn’t just a command for the Midjourney AI software, but also a metaphor for the boundless potential of creativity offered by AI.
Beside that, what’s your favorite art style?
MetaCher: The endless, exploratory opportunities provided by AI highlight my diverse interests in art styles. I have a strong interest in various fields such as abstract art, digital art, and installation art. I particularly favor experimental works. I like to explore different styles and experiences during the creative process, and I believe that the process of creation itself is a vital part of the artwork.
Throughout the exhibition, we see an extensive use of electronic devices – midi controllers, iPads, laptops, cameras, and televisions. Can you tell us more about how these devices factor into your work?
MetaCher: The inception of “Prompt IS Art” centers on the electronic devices that surround us daily. This fusion of devices sets the stage for an interactive dialogue between the artist, viewers, and developers. Thus, “Prompt IS Art” creates a communal journey through different perspectives and artistic landscapes.
Among your various works, a digital video artwork called Donate your Prompt stands out. Can you share more about this particular piece?
MetaCher: “Donate your Prompt” features an AI-generated video of prompt submissions from viewers at my previous exhibitions in New York, Tokyo, and online. This process creates a real-time interactive work so when you are close to it, you see the prompts behind the AI-generated visuals. Also, the real-time artwork reflects surrounding sounds and weather, suggesting it has its own perception. Its inspiration comes from our imagination of the future and our participation in the present.
MetaCher, you’ve taken us on an enlightening journey through the ‘Prompt IS Art’ concept. Your exhibition, “/imagine…AI+I=All?”, actively encourages audiences to partake in the creative process. As we conclude our conversation, we’re left pondering: Are we on the threshold of a new era where AI and the human imagination amalgamate into a unified creative entity?
MetaCher: The future of art may well be on the brink of a merger between AI and human imagination. Whether or not that future is close, it’s crucial to continue exploring ideas, pushing boundaries, and challenging our perceptions. More importantly, we must guide the direction of art to its next level since art is about the human experience. Through my work, I invite everyone to imagine the future as a shared experience between human imagination and the possibilities of AI.
