Anna Blaski, a celebrated actress known for her versatility and depth, is navigating the big shifts in the acting world brought on by digital advancements. During our chat, she opened up about her journey through the rise of streaming platforms, the essential role of social media in self-promotion, and the mix of opportunities and challenges that come with online auditioning. Anna’s reflections provide a clear view into how technology is expanding yet complicating the world of modern performance.
Anna, thank you for taking the time to chat with us. Let’s dive right in. How have you experienced the changing environment of acting in the modern world?
I’d say today is the best and the worst time to be an actor. The best because of all the opportunities created with the rise of the streaming platforms. The worst, because often times productions lack the depth they used to have when film making was less of making, more of creating. Yet again, with the rise of streaming platforms, the landscape has become more diverse and dynamic. From actor’s perspective, we definitely have a better chance to explore a wide range of roles than people had even 20 years ago.
Social media has certainly changed the game. How do you feel about it?
These days it’s almost impossible to promote yourself without the use of social media. A lot of networking has moved to platforms like Instagram which makes it a necessity to make use of it to a certain degree.
And what about auditioning online and finding roles internationally through online castings? How has that changed the landscape?
Auditioning online has stayed with us for good as lockdown aftermath and it has made the world feel smaller in the best possible way. I’ve had the opportunity to audition for roles from all over the world without leaving my living room. It’s opened up a whole new world of possibilities to many people. As much as I am a huge fun of face to face talks, I appreciate that people who don’t live in hubs like London, Los Angeles or New York are given a chance to participate in the process.
Looking ahead, what are your thoughts on the future of performance in an increasingly digital world?
I don’t think there’s any stopping to AI entering our life for good and without a doubt it is going to impact entertainment just as any other industry. What I’m hoping for it that real people and storytelling will always remain at the heart of what we do. As actors, it’s our job to adapt and embrace these changes while staying true to our craft.
Well said, Anna. Thank you for sharing your insights with us today.
