Maurizio D’Andrea’s journey into the art world began in 1967, right in the shadow of the majestic Vesuvius in Naples, Italy. The towering volcano not only shaped his childhood landscape but also deeply influenced his art, endowing it with a primal, elemental vitality. D’Andrea’s connection with Vesuvius extends into his academic life as well; he pursued a degree in geological sciences, focusing on volcanology and excelling with honors.

From an early age, D’Andrea was fascinated by the inner workings of the mind, diving into the works of Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud. This passion for psychology has been a driving force behind his art, pushing him to start painting at just 16 years old. His early pieces are thoughtful explorations, using the canvas to navigate and depict the intricate mental landscapes he envisioned.

Maurizio initially adopted a very tactile approach to painting. He often used his hands instead of brushes, seeking a direct and intense connection with his canvas. This method evolved over time as he began experimenting with various tools—brushes, spatulas, rollers, and rags—each adding its own texture and complexity to his art.

D’Andrea’s artwork is known for its vibrant colors and dynamic, sometimes stormy, gestures. He has studied and found inspiration in the works of artists like Jackson Pollock and Emilio Vedova, known for their spontaneous, expressive styles. Yet, D’Andrea’s own style goes beyond mere imitation, as he infuses his deep understanding of psychoanalysis into the energetic yet controlled chaos of his paintings.

A vibrant selection from Maurizio D’Andrea’s extensive portfolio, highlighting his dynamic use of color and form in abstract art.

His art falls into the realm of lyrical-informal abstraction, aiming to convey deep emotions and sensations through abstract shapes and gestures. These artistic elements act as gateways to the unconscious, challenging viewers to look beyond the obvious and connect with the broader, universal themes of human existence.

Currently living in Alba, in Italy’s province of Cuneo, Maurizio works from his studio named “Impossible Horizons.” The studio’s name mirrors his artistic philosophy—a relentless pursuit to break through the boundaries of human perception and expression. His ongoing work invites viewers to traverse the abstract planes of thought, delving into the profound depths of the unconscious.

Maurizio D’Andrea continues to be a prominent figure in the international art scene, constantly pushing the limits of abstract painting. His art not only mirrors his psychological explorations but also offers a medium for viewers to examine their own subconscious realms.
