My name is Sharon Baker-Boykin, and I’m an attorney, legal life coach, author, and speaker. I help business professionals get their act together by creating a legal estate plan that protects their loved ones, as well as their favorite religious and charitable organizations. When the inevitable happens, you’ll have already decided who gets the treasure trove of stuff you’ve collected over your lifetime.
In your experience, how do you handle setbacks or difficult moments in your coaching business, and what lessons have you learned from them?
Setbacks and difficult moments? Just part of the gig. I see them as golden opportunities for learning. Let’s be real, everyone’s hit a rough patch, but not everyone’s keen on dishing about it. However, once you’ve weathered the storm and glance back, there’s always a lesson, sometimes even a hidden gem, for having soldiered through. You ditch the deadweight, bump into folks who prop you up to your next level, and realize you’re tougher for not letting the bumps in the road halt your journey. The lower you dip during these times, the sweeter the victory and the higher you soar afterwards.
Besides your professional achievements, are there any personal values or philosophies that have significantly influenced the way you run your coaching business?
I encourage everyone to embrace the student/teacher mode in life. We constantly learn and experience new things. While in this mode of discovery, I urge others to take notes and document their journey. Once you’ve aced the final exam, you shift into teacher mode, ready to guide those following in your footsteps. Being a trailblazer, whether in your family, among friends, at work, or within your business, is tough. It’s like hacking your way through a jungle, getting nicked and scraped, yet pressing on. Once you emerge on the other side, the purpose of your journey becomes clear. That moment of reflection allows you to assist others with a smile, knowing you’ve paved a path for them.
How do you differentiate your coaching approach from others in the industry, and what unique value do you bring to your clients?
As a licensed attorney with 40 years under my belt, my career has been a series of pioneering moments, often as the first Black woman in various roles. My extensive experience in legal and business realms is what I draw upon to demystify the legal and business challenges my clients face daily. With expertise from both sides of the aisle, I help my clients comprehend their options for putting their affairs in order. It all starts with the decision to embrace change. My firm, Power of 1 Decision, LLC, is founded on the belief that there’s immense power in making that first, pivotal decision to alter your course for a more impactful outcome. I translate legalese into everyday language, empowering my clients to make informed decisions and advance toward their desired results.
What are some of the biggest challenges you faced when starting your coaching business, and how did you overcome them?
When I kicked off my coaching business, I encountered several hefty challenges: juggling the startup phase with a full-time job, ensuring my financial goals were realistic, and figuring out how to effectively market my business. While working my day job, I came to a stark realization: I didn’t own my job. I could be replaced at any moment, with no say in the future of my position. This pushed me to meticulously plan the launch of my business, dedicating my post-job hours exclusively to this new venture. I became disciplined about scheduling and sticking to it.
As for the financial aspect, I had to devise a plan outlining the income I aimed to achieve and strategize on how to reach that goal. This involved regularly evaluating my plan, making necessary adjustments, and seeking guidance from those more knowledgeable in this area.
When it came to marketing, I set specific goals and consistently reviewed my strategies to enhance them, aiming to meet my established objectives. Collaborating with individuals who had proven marketing plans I could adapt was also a game-changer. Additionally, I recorded my vision for my company and the results I aspired to achieve, listening to this recording daily to maintain focus on my primary goals.
