Can you introduce yourself and share your journey as an author and coach in the personal development industry?
I’m Tish Dinkins, CEO of Paintiza LLC, where we help corporations, small businesses, and professionals improve employee performance & boost morale through team-building art events. In full disclosure, I never set out to be an author, but as life would have it, I eventually became one (and of several books, no less)! Through the years, I have learned that the best way to pass along your knowledge and experience to someone else, while being seen as an authority in that field, is definitely through a book. During the writing and researching process, I was able to develop the mental and emotional skills necessary to succeed not only in my industry but in life as a single, female entrepreneur. I have been fortunate enough to meet many wonderful individuals along the way and become a part of some amazing events and experiences just by sharing my printed words. I truly believe that solving problems and inspiring others through books are the key to helping society.
In your experience, how do you handle setbacks or difficult moments in your coaching business, and what lessons have you learned from them?
I have always believed that our biggest lessons come from our mistakes. First, we have to accept that we will make them. Next, we have to assess what went wrong and figure out how we can prevent repeating that mistake in the future. Also, listening to constructive criticism and helpful feedback from others (especially our clients) will go a long way to help us deal with failures. It’s like learning to skate. You have to keep on trying, making adjustments as you fall along the way. But finally being able to master the craft makes all the mistakes and setbacks worthwhile. No one wants to be labeled a quitter, so enduring the ups and downs of the business will only make you stronger and bring you one step closer to the success you truly deserve.
Besides your professional achievements, are there any personal values or philosophies that have significantly influenced the way you run your coaching business?
I have always been a firm believer in a few basic truths, all of them taught to me by my parents. First, always be on time (basically early) for everything! My parents always said, “To be on time is to be late, to be late is a tragedy.” You never get a second chance to make a first impression, so this is very important. Next, they taught me to be the best in EVERYTHING you do, no matter how small or large the task. You should equally strive for excellence, whether you’re a cashier or if you’re a top executive of a large corporation. Lastly, they taught me to ignore the haters. Jealousy and envy are the real reasons why many try their best to discourage you from pursuing your goals in the form of insults and indifference. Only listen to the seed that was planted within your heart and yours alone, and never stop working on your plans until your goals have been achieved. Misery loves company, so don’t open your door to invite the negative Nancys inside. As a result of operating in these values, my clients receive the full experience they deserve and more when I work with them. It’s crucial to not only deliver on your promises to them but to also leave such a wonderful memory that they will work with you again, and refer others too!
How do you differentiate your coaching approach from others in the industry, and what unique value do you bring to your clients?
In the world of team building, most programs use the same games and traditional art styles to teach each member how to work together to have the same individual results in the name of strengthening the company as a whole. Everyone leaves with the same artwork and projects, without any room for creativity or individualism. What sets my team-building program apart is that I help each team member use non-traditional art techniques to create projects unique to each individual, while at the same time still helping them work with the entire group as a whole. The results have been phenomenal, with rave reviews from many of my clients. By focusing on inspiring one’s unique creativity within a group setting, self-esteem and a newfound motivation have been the keys to changing my client’s lives, especially in the professional setting.
What are some of the biggest challenges you faced when starting your coaching business, and how did you overcome them?
I had to overcome the fear of feeling worthy enough to teach others from a business owner’s standpoint. Over the years, I had always excelled in an employee capacity, but was I truly ready to do so as a coach and executive of my own company? Then I had to remember the reasons that I started in the first place. I knew firsthand the impact of how using art changed my life for the better both at work and at home, and only I could present this to the world in my own unique way. I owed it to myself, my clients, my family, and everyone else that looks up to me to make sure that I live out my calling. Once I kept focusing on my why, I was able to overcome ‘the imposter syndrome’ and began to change lives, one company – one person at a time.
