Slick Guruzee (real name Derrick Clark), a Pittsburgh native, stands out in today’s crowded hip-hop scene. His latest single, “Supreme Pizza,” captures what happens when East Coast grit meets West Coast flow. It’s rooted in his personal story, built on real experiences rather than manufactured hype.
Born in November 1997, Slick started writing rap lyrics at 8 years old. Those early sessions in his East Pittsburgh bedroom, writing over industry beats, laid the foundation for what he’s doing now. His path hasn’t been straightforward, but that’s what gives his music its edge.
Slick’s breakthrough came in 2014 through a collaboration with Stump Thompson, his entry point into professional music. His time with M.O.E. Gang (Money Over Everything) reflected the reality of Pittsburgh’s streets, the drugs and money and violence that shaped his environment. Music became his way through all of it.
The 2015 shift from Lil Slick to Slick Guruzee marked a turning point. He drew from the Sanskrit word “Guru,” a term for intellectual guide and leader, when launching the Guruzee Gang movement. The rebrand represented genuine growth, both as an artist and someone building something bigger than himself.

“Supreme Pizza,” which dropped January 12th, runs just over two minutes and packs in Slick’s experiences, ambitions, and distinct style. The production complements Guruzee’s flow without overshadowing it. The track offers a direct look at his perspective, tracing a line from Pittsburgh’s streets to wherever his ambitions take him. Streaming numbers suggest listeners are connecting with what he’s putting out there.
Slick treats music as a community effort, not just a solo pursuit. He’s figured out how to turn casual listeners into actual fans through consistent social media presence, intimate live performances, and direct engagement. His audience isn’t passive, they’re part of what Guruzee is building.
Jay-Z and Lil Wayne influenced Slick’s approach to both music and business. He’s running his own operation under the Guruzee name, treating it as a complete brand rather than just a stage persona.
With “Supreme Pizza” gaining traction, attention is building toward his upcoming mixtape “Who Is Slick Guruzee.” This single sets the stage for what’s coming next. Slick’s trajectory from Pittsburgh to a wider audience reflects persistence and commitment to developing his craft.
