In an era where access to quality healthcare and proper nutrition education remains a luxury for many, community-based organizations have become essential lifelines for underserved populations. For The Better Inc., a nonprofit founded in Brooklyn, New York, stands at the forefront of this effort, striving to empower minority and at-risk youth through transformative health and nutrition education programs.

With a mission rooted in addressing health disparities, For The Better Inc. leads a movement to educate young people about nutrition while instilling lifelong habits to prevent chronic illnesses. At the heart of this initiative is the organization’s commitment to ensuring that every child, regardless of their background, has the tools and knowledge to lead a healthy, fulfilling life. This article explores how For The Better Inc. is making a tangible difference in the lives of minority youth and the community through innovative programs and partnerships.

The Growing Need for Health and Nutrition Education

The statistics are staggering: minority youth, particularly those from Black and Brown communities, are disproportionately affected by obesity, diabetes, and other diet-related health issues. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), obesity rates among African American and Latino adolescents are significantly higher than among their white peers. In New York City alone, one in three children is considered overweight or obese, with even higher rates in low-income neighborhoods.

Founder Rasheedat Ajala, a Family Nurse Practitioner, witnessed these disparities firsthand. “I saw how young people in our community were left out of important health conversations,” she shares. “It wasn’t just about access to healthcare; it was about the lack of education on what it means to be healthy. These kids weren’t being given the tools they needed to make informed decisions about their health.”

Out of this realization, For The Better Inc. was born in 2020. Ajala’s vision was to create a program that would focus on preventative health measures, targeting the root causes of chronic illnesses like obesity, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes.

The Better Health Program: A Holistic Approach

At the core of For The Better Inc.’s impact is its flagship initiative, The Better Health Program. This 8-session series brings together teenagers from underserved communities, providing them with practical, hands-on education on nutrition, fitness, and lifestyle changes. The program goes beyond teaching facts; it fosters a new mindset around health and wellness.

Participants receive nutrition education from certified dietitians, participate in cooking classes where they learn to prepare healthy meals, and engage in personal training sessions that introduce them to enjoyable, sustainable forms of physical activity. At the beginning and end of each program, teens undergo assessments to track their progress, and the results have been impressive.

“We saw an incredible 90% reduction in fast food consumption among participants,” Ajala notes. “More than 80% of the teens started cooking meals at home with their families, and 75% reported feeling more confident about their ability to make healthier food choices.”

This approach is effective because it doesn’t just tell teens what to do; it equips them with practical skills and knowledge they can carry with them for the rest of their lives. By addressing both the physical and mental aspects of health, For The Better Inc. is creating a generation of young people who are not only knowledgeable about health but are also capable of influencing their peers and communities.

Empowering Teens to Become Health Ambassadors

One of the most powerful aspects of For The Better Inc.’s programming is its emphasis on creating health ambassadors—youth who take the lessons they’ve learned and bring them back to their families and communities. These ambassadors are tasked with sharing their knowledge and inspiring others to make better health choices.

Through leadership training and mentorship, these teens are encouraged to become advocates for health and wellness, amplifying the impact of the program far beyond its initial reach. “We’re not just teaching kids to be healthy; we’re teaching them to lead,” says Ajala. “Our goal is to have these teens be the driving force behind a healthier future for their communities.”

Strategic Partnerships: The Key to Scaling Impact

For The Better Inc. has recognized that addressing health disparities on a large scale requires collaboration. The organization has formed strategic partnerships with a variety of community stakeholders, including local schools, churches, and health organizations. These partnerships allow the program to expand its reach, serving hundreds of teens each year.

In 2021, For The Better Inc. partnered with Black Health and Hope City Church in East New York to distribute COVID-19 vaccines and provide health education to over 400 community members. Through these efforts, the organization leveraged its existing relationships to address both immediate health concerns and long-term preventative measures.

Moreover, collaborations with organizations like Ponce Bank, The Annabelle Foundation, and Youth Bridge NY provide the financial support necessary to sustain and grow For The Better Inc.’s initiatives. These partnerships not only ensure the continuity of programs but also create opportunities for expansion into new neighborhoods and communities.

The Role of Nutrition in Combating Health Disparities

Nutrition is a critical component of For The Better Inc.’s strategy to combat health disparities. Minority communities often face limited access to fresh, nutritious food, known as “food deserts.” For The Better Inc. is working to change that by educating teens about the importance of whole foods, teaching them to cook healthy meals, and helping them make informed choices at the grocery store.

The program’s curriculum includes lessons on reading nutrition labels, understanding portion sizes, and the benefits of incorporating foods like soursop, chia seeds, and other superfoods. This education is vital in combating the rise of diet-related illnesses in minority communities, where fast food is often the most accessible option.

“We want to break the cycle of unhealthy eating habits that have been passed down through generations,” Ajala says. “By empowering teens with this knowledge, we’re giving them the tools to create healthier futures for themselves and their families.”

Looking to the Future: Scaling for Greater Impact

As For The Better Inc. looks to the future, the organization is focused on scaling its impact even further. Plans are underway to expand the Better Health Program to additional schools and community centers throughout New York City, and the organization is exploring opportunities to replicate the program in other cities across the U.S.

To support this growth, For The Better Inc. is actively seeking additional funding and partnerships to reach more at-risk youth. “Our goal is to serve as many young people as possible,” Ajala says. “We know that what we’re doing is working, and we’re committed to scaling our efforts to make an even bigger impact.”

Conclusion

For The Better Inc. is more than just a nonprofit organization; it’s a movement aimed at empowering minority youth to take control of their health and futures. Through innovative programming, strategic partnerships, and a commitment to sustainability, For The Better Inc. is making a lasting impact on the lives of at-risk youth. As the organization grows, its work serves as a model for how community-based organizations can address health disparities and create lasting change.

By focusing on nutrition education and empowering youth to become health ambassadors, For The Better Inc. is addressing the immediate health needs of today’s teens and laying the foundation for a healthier, more equitable future.Join us in expanding our reach.
