Creativity and functionality dance a delicate tango in the world of interior design, and amidst this graceful performance, Elyse Bensusan has carved out a unique niche for herself. As the founder, head of creative, and principal designer of Elyse Interiors, a New York-based interior design agency, Bensusan brings a refreshing perspective to her work that makes her stand out in an industry brimming with talent.

Bensusan’s path to interior design is as fascinating as her designs themselves. Initially trained as a Doctor of Psychology (no small feat, mind you), she found herself increasingly drawn to the field of Environmental Psychology – a discipline that delves into the complex relationship between people and the spaces they inhabit. Little did she know that this background would become the secret sauce in her design philosophy, enabling her to create spaces that not only please the eye but also nourish the soul.

The leap from psychology to interior design wasn’t a carefully plotted career move for Bensusan. Rather, it was during the tumultuous days of the global pandemic that she decided to take a chance on her long-standing passion for home decoration. What started as a small project in the Hamptons – perhaps a welcome distraction from the chaos of 2020 – quickly snowballed into a full-fledged business.

Elyse Interiors has become renowned for what Bensusan playfully calls the “art of the mix.” This isn’t just about throwing different styles together and hoping for the best. No, Bensusan’s approach involves a careful blending of modern forms with vintage details, resulting in spaces that are at once chic, fresh, and organic. It’s like she’s conducting an orchestra of design elements, each playing its part in perfect harmony.

One of the hallmarks of Bensusan’s style is her knack for creating contrast within a space. She artfully juxtaposes old and new, soft and hard-edged elements to create interiors that feel both timeless and contemporary. It’s a bit like pairing a vintage Chanel jacket with modern jeans – unexpected, but oh so chic when done right.

Bensusan’s work isn’t confined to the Big Apple. Her design footprint stretches from the sun-kissed shores of Los Angeles to the historic charm of Greenwich, and even across the pond to the romantic streets of Paris. This globetrotting portfolio has allowed her to develop a chameleon-like ability to adapt to various cultural contexts while still maintaining her signature style.

But don’t think for a second that Bensusan has left her psychology roots behind. She still maintains a successful psychological testing practice where she mentors early-career psychologists. It’s as if she’s leading a double life – by day, she’s transforming spaces, and by night, she’s shaping minds.

In her personal life, Bensusan is a devoted mother to two daughters, Ava and Evelyn. She somehow manages to balance her professional pursuits with her passion for reading and home decoration. One of her favorite pastimes? Renovating distressed properties and turning them into dream homes.

Perhaps the most heartwarming aspect of Bensusan’s career is her commitment to giving back. Through her non-profit charity, Elysium Gives, she helps families transition from shelters into more permanent housing. The organization provides essentials like beds and furniture to those in need. It’s not just about material possessions – it’s about providing a fresh start and a glimmer of hope. In Bensusan’s world, everyone deserves a space that feels like home.

Elyse Bensusan’s journey from Ivy League psychologist to successful interior designer is like a masterclass in following your passion. By blending her understanding of human psychology with her keen eye for design, she’s created a unique approach to interior spaces that considers both beauty and emotional comfort. Her work, ranging from high-end residential projects to charitable initiatives, shows that thoughtful design can indeed be a game-changer, whether in a luxurious penthouse or a modest home for someone transitioning out of a shelter.

As Elyse Interiors continues to grow and evolve, one thing is clear: Bensusan’s special blend of psychological insight and design flair will keep shaping beautiful, functional, and emotionally resonant spaces for years to come. In a world that can often feel chaotic and unpredictable, Bensusan’s designs offer a welcome respite – a reminder that our surroundings can indeed nurture our wellbeing. And isn’t that something we could all use a little more of?

Discover Elyse Bensusan’s design philosophy on the Elyse Interiors website, follow her latest projects on Instagram, watch her design tips on her YouTube Channel, catch behind-the-scenes moments on TikTok, and learn about her charitable work at the Elysium Gives website.
